About Tuapeka Turbines
Tuapeka Turbines documents the development of a simple linear turbine intended to extract useful power directly from flowing water.
The project was developed by M. J. Service and collaborators through a combination of theoretical analysis, engineering design, construction, and experimental testing. Much of the work dates from the 1980s and was originally presented in technical papers, drawings, photographs, and later website material.
This website brings that material together in a form that is easier to read, inspect, and preserve.
The Project
The Tuapeka turbine is a linear water turbine designed for use in open-channel flow.
Rather than requiring a conventional dam or enclosed pressure system, the concept is based on extracting energy from the movement of water in a river or channel. The design was developed with simplicity, practical construction, and potential use in locations with limited infrastructure in mind.
The site includes the theoretical basis of the turbine, detailed design work, construction drawings, experimental material, publications, and development records.

Historical Material
A significant part of this website is an archive of the original technical work.
The Theory and Design sections include reconstructed digital editions of published papers. The Drawings section presents reconstructed versions of the original construction drawings, together with scans of the source material.
The reconstructed material is intended to improve readability while preserving the technical content of the original documents. Where appropriate, the original scanned documents are also available for reference.
Purpose of This Website
The purpose of this site is to preserve the Tuapeka Turbines project and make its technical material accessible to engineers, researchers, students, and others interested in small-scale hydro power and unconventional turbine design.
It also provides a place for the project’s development history, experimental work, publications, photographs, videos, and related notes to remain available in one location.
The intention is not only to preserve the historical record, but also to make it easier for others to study the work, discuss it, and build upon the ideas where appropriate.
About M. J. Service
M. J. Service was the principal engineer behind the Tuapeka Turbines project and the author or co-author of the technical papers presented on this site.
His work on the turbine combined theoretical analysis with practical engineering, prototype development, testing, and detailed mechanical design.
The material preserved here reflects many years of investigation into how a simple linear turbine could be used to extract useful energy from river flow.
